Greek police officer overseeing refugees indicted for forgery and attempted fraud

Published on

A Greek police officer working in a unit responsible for the identification of refugees was indicted for forgery and attempted fraud last week, following an investigation by the European Public Prosecutor Office’s (EPPO) in Athens.

The police lieutenant is accused of submitting fake receipts, during the course of his service, for travel and accommodation expenses that were never incurred. These expenses, covered by the European Union’s Internal Security Fund (ISF), amounted to €12 000.

The disputed invoices were issued by a hotel on the Greek island of Kos, where the police officer had been assigned to work. He is accused of using a false stamp and forged signature of the service provider.

The public official performed duties in the framework of the action ‘Strengthening police services with personnel to provide security services at the reception and identification centres of the East Aegean Islands’, funded by the EU.

This is the first EPPO indictment in Greece since the start of its operations in June 2021.

The case will be tried by the competent Athens court.
