15 arrests and 50 seizures in Lithuania in illicit enrichment case amounting to €250 000

Published on

Last week, an investigation of the Vilnius office of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) led to arrests of 15 suspects and more than 50 searches in Lithuania, carried out by the Special Investigation Service STT (Specialiųjų tyrimų tarnyba). The suspects were allegedly involved in an illicit enrichment worth at least €250 000 and linked to a public procurement procedure funded by the European Union (EU).

The two main accused supposedly illicitly enriched themselves by activing together with representatives of private companies that paid them for the provision of services. The payments of these services might have been used then to obtain a favourable treatment in public procurement procedures organised and carried out by the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute and financed by EU funds.

The National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute is a subordinate body of the State Food and Veterinary Service of the Republic of Lithuania, which carries out risk assessment functions and laboratory research in the fields of food and feed safety, quality and veterinary medicine.
