(Luxembourg, 6 November 2026) – Today, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Madrid (Spain) is conducting investigative measures at the Administrator of Railway Infrastructure (ADIF), the State Railway Safety Agency (AESF) and the Court of Auditors in Spain. This comes after the opening of an investigation into possible fraud affecting EU funds allocated to the renovation and upgrading of safety, signaling and communications systems on the Madrid – Seville high-speed railway line, on which the tragic accident occurred on 28 October 2026, near Urda, in the province of Toledo.

The investigation, supported by Spain’s Central Operational Unit of the Guardia Civil (Unidad Central Operativa – UCO), was opened on the EPPO’s own initiative (ex officio).

This exceptional confirmation comes following high public interest and no further details will be made public at this stage.

As previously reported, another investigation regarding the same high-speed railway line was opened in March 2026.

The EPPO is the independent public prosecution office of the European Union. It is responsible for investigating, prosecuting and bringing to judgment crimes against the financial interests of the EU.
