As previously reported on 25 May 2022, the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) in Zagreb filed an indictment against 10 Croatian citizens, including the mayors of Nova Gradiška and Velika Gorica, for active and passive corruption and abuse of function. Today, the County Court in Zagreb issued the verdict against three of the accused, who were all found guilty of illegal favouritism and attempt of abuse of function.

The European Chief Prosecutor and the Secretary-General of the European Commission met today in Luxembourg to conduct the first annual high-level review of mutual cooperation under the agreement between the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) and the European Commission.

The activities relate to two persons suspected of unlawful favouritism and incitement to unlawful favouritism regarding a public procurement call by the Croatian Agency for SMEs, Innovations and Investments (HAMAG-BICRO) for a project funded by the EU.

The EPPO will, after questioning the suspects, make a decision on further actions in the case and communicate in due time. Until then, no further details will be released.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) Turin is leading an investigation into a public official of the forestry department from the Autonomous Region of Aosta Valley. The Economic and Financial Police Unit of the Guardia di Finanza of Aosta will put the suspect today under house arrest and around €15 000 will be seized.

Thanks to an investigation led by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Milan and carried out by the Nucleo di Polizia Economico-Finanziaria Milano, the Italian Financial Police of Milan (Guardia di Finanza Milano) seized more than €2 million from an Italian company today.  

More than €1.1 million was preventively seized last Friday from two Italian companies operating in the medical supplies sector, at the request of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). The two companies and their director are suspected of aggravated fraud against various healthcare facilities and hospitals in the regions of Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta and Sicily, by providing them with more than 100 000 FFP2 and FFP3 face masks and protective suits without suitable certification.

Today in Sicily (Italy), the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Agri-food of Messina (Reparto Carabinieri per la Tutela Agroalimentare di Messina) seized over €160 000 in movable assets and real estate, in an investigation into agricultural funding fraud carried out by the Palermo office of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO).
