European Chief Prosecutor expresses grave concerns in letter to Slovenian Minister for Justice

Published on

This morning the President of the State Prosecutorial Council of Slovenia, Tamara Gregorčič, informed the European Chief Prosecutor, Laura Kövesi, and the two Deputy European Chief Prosecutors, Andrés Ritter and Danilo Ceccarelli, about the latest developments following the Slovenian government’s decision to annul the procedure to select two candidates for the post of European Delegated Prosecutor. The European Chief Prosecutor and the Deputy European Chief Prosecutors share the State Prosecutorial Council’s analysis of the risks inherent to the launch of a new selection procedure in the present circumstances, and welcome today’s statement of the State Prosecutorial Council, in defence of judicial independence in Slovenia.

In this context, the European Chief Prosecutor today sent a letter to the new Slovenian Minister for Justice, highlighting how the recent decisions of the Slovenian government undermine the effective work of the EPPO and seriously and in a direct way affect the sound financial management of the EU budget and the protection of the financial interests of the European Union.
