(Luxembourg, 10 March 2026) – Today, the European Parliament approved the appointment of Andrés Ritter as the next European Chief Prosecutor, following the Council of the EU’s agreement yesterday. His mandate will start on 1 November 2026.
Andrés Ritter joined the prosecution service of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1995 and became Deputy Prosecutor General in the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in 2008. He subsequently headed various public prosecution offices, including the specialised Public Prosecution Office for Economic Crime and Cybercrime in Rostock, between 2013 and 2020, before becoming the first European Prosecutor from Germany. Andrés Ritter has been Deputy European Chief Prosecutor since 11 November 2020.
"I warmly welcome the appointment of Andrés Ritter as the next European Chief Prosecutor. Andrés Ritter has a comprehensive understanding of the EPPO and of the main challenges ahead, as well as a deep commitment to judicial independence. I am confident that under his leadership, the EPPO will continue to protect the financial interests of the EU and the rule of law most efficiently", said the European Chief Prosecutor, Laura Kövesi.
The EPPO is the independent public prosecution office of the European Union. It is responsible for investigating, prosecuting, and bringing to judgment crimes against the financial interests of the EU.
