Omar Caruana joined the Malta Police Force in 2001 and progressed through the ranks, being appointed a Police Inspector in 2020. During his career, he acquired extensive experience in criminal investigations and prosecutions, with a particular focus on serious financial crime.
Throughout his career, he also gained extensive experience in international cooperation in criminal matters. He represented Malta in various international investigative and operational groups and served as the Malta Police Force’s liaison officer for the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Prior to his appointment as European Prosecutor, he headed the International Office of the Financial Crimes Investigations Department within the Malta Police Force, where he was responsible for international cooperation with foreign law enforcement and judicial authorities.
In June 2026, he was appointed European Prosecutor from Malta by the Council of the EU.
