José António Lopes Ranito has been a prosecutor since 2001. From 2005 to 2014, he served at the Lisbon District Criminal Investigation and Prosecution Office, in a specialised unit dedicated to the investigation of financial and economic crime. From 2014 until 2021, he served at the Central Criminal Investigation and Prosecution Department (DCIAP) – the Portuguese prosecution office with nationwide territorial competence for corruption, serious and international organised crime, and financial and economic crime.

From 2020 to May 2021, he was Deputy to the Head of the DCIAP (the point of contact) for the European Judicial Network (EJN), and was jointly responsible for the Unit for International Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters at the same department.

From May 2021, he was a European Delegated Prosecutor of the EPPO, at the EPPO’s Lisbon office. In July 2023, he was appointed European Prosecutor for Portugal by the Council of the EU.
